The Massachusetts General Hospital Ataxia Unit and Dr. Schmahmann’s Laboratory for Neuroanatomy and Cerebellar Neurobiology are well established and highly regarded locally and internationally. The clinical work in the Ataxia Unit and the research findings of the Schmahmann laboratory have already contributed substantially to improving patient care and to the understanding of cerebellar and other neurological disorders. They also share the goals of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disorders (MIND) to develop new insights into, and effective treatments for devastating neurodegenerative disorders.
I am optimistic that with the support of philanthropic investment, Dr. Schmahmann’s research efforts and closer collaboration with MIND will lead to further important discoveries in human brain structure and function, new understanding of the causes and effects of neuropsychiatric and cerebellar disorders, and novel treatments strategies that will improve the lives of our patients.
